Four key nautical inspired looks:
Stripes
One of the easiest ways to get on board with the nautical look is to wear a striped top, or blouse. Navy and white stripe designs are particularly iconic when it comes to nautical looks. Try pairing a striped top with a white bottom and red accessories, or vice versa, to create a nautical look. Red, white and blue create a nautical feel instantly. If this seems like a little too much for you, you could simply try pairing a striped top with a denim bottom for a more subtle variation.
A Red, white and blue color scheme
As mentioned when you wear red, white and blue together it often conjures up a nautical feel. So if you are looking to create a nautical look with items you already have on hand, take a look at what you own in these colors and see what you can piece together.
Anchors and sail boats
Some nautical designs feature literal nautical images like anchors and sailboats. If you want to keep your look fashion forward versus costume like, it is best to either steer clear of these styles, or only wear the most subtle versions of them. For example, some designs include buttons with tiny anchors or sailboats printed on them, or incorporate small metal anchor charms. In a casual wear sense they can add cute touches that are only visible on closer inspection. Whereas a picture of a sailboat that covers the majority of your torso can be a little to “in your face”.
Feature buttons
Many nautical designs feature multiple decorative buttons. For example, double breasted style buttons on dress fronts, high waist skirts and bikini bottoms. Even a double breasted jacket paired with something like a striped top can create a nautical look.
A few additional tips:
If you are wearing a statement nautical design, such as a nautical dress with stripes, feature buttons and decorative anchors, it is generally best to pair it back with simple and classic pieces. In this instance, try styles like nude sandals and a low key handbag.
If a full on nautical look seems a bit intimidating, remember you can always try a nautical inspired accessory instead. There are many cute shoes, bags and even belts that hint at nautical inspiration, for example try a striped canvas handbag with your weekend attire.
