Spring/Summer 2012 Skirt Trends

If you are looking to update your wardrobe for spring/summer 2012, it is beneficial to know what styles are popular for the season. When it comes to skirts, many classic styles remain a fashion constant, but there are also some more standout new styles emerging.

Six popular skirt trends for spring/summer 2012:

1. The maxi skirt

The floor skimming maxi skirt is once again popular for summer. Printed styles are very popular alongside styles that feature a sheer layer over the top. Many of these only feature a mini skirt length underskirt. If you don’t already have a plain black maxi skirt this would also make a good investment, as it will carry you through to fall and winter.

2. Pencil skirts

The ever popular pencil skirt is still as fashionable as ever, and many designers have given it a fresh new twist this spring/summer. There are color block styles, styles with lace up details, ruching, and daring splits. Bright colored styles like hot pink and fire engine red are also very popular.

3. Bandage and body contouring styles

Bandage and body contouring skirts take things a step further than your average pencil skirt when it comes to fit. They literally hug every curve of your lower body. They are best suited to women who feel completely confident in showing off their body, because they tend to contain a high percentage of spandex. However, because they are so stretchy they do tend to be quite comfortable. If you are body conscious you will find styles that feature dark side panels. These help to trick the eye into seeing your width as only as wide as the middle panel of the skirt. Color block body con styles are particularly trendy for spring/summer 2012.

4. Midi skirts

Midi skirts are emerging as a popular trend for spring/summer 2012. This could be in part due to retro television shows like Mad men and Pan Am. If you want to show some leg, but not too much this below the knee length style might be just what you are looking for. Many styles are A-line or flared in shape. This can be a very flattering style for pear shaped women.

5. Pleating

There are lots of pleated skirts on offer for summer 2012. You will find styles that feature soft Grecian pleats, right through to more defined pleated styles.

6. Ruffles

If girly is your thing, keep an eye out for ruffled skirts. Many skirts for spring/summer feature peplum ruffles, frilled hems, or asymmetric ruffle details. When it comes to print, floral prints, stripes and tie dye styles are all popular.
